Hundreds of years from now, no one will know who we are. There will come a time far off in the future when everyone will forget us. Our name will dissolve throughout the generations until it dies with the last person we reached to. But if we do great things for the world, those acts will never die. And that’s really the only way to live on in this world after death; to do something so great that we will be loved and known long after we die. It’s not the cars, money and large homes we’ll be remembered for, but what we did while we were alive to show our existence actually made a difference.
While we’re worried about what to do this weekend, someone is walking for hours to fetch a pail of water for their family. While our parents are cooking dinner, someone is worried about how they’ll feed their own tomorrow. Whatever problems we have, someone has it worse than us.
There’s a line in the song I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz which says that ” I don’t want to be someone who walks so easily, I’m here to stay and make a difference that I can make…”
Let us bear in mind that today isn’t just another day, we can create something beautiful. Ask yourself. What if we all took time to make others happy?
There are so many ways that we can start changing the world, so many organizations that need our help, so many people that we can help save. Before our skepticism starts kicking in saying, ” I don’t have the money to donate or there are already plenty of people taking care of those things”, keep listening or reading. There are several ways to make a difference in the world other than donating money. For us starters, making people aware of the many problems around the world can make a difference. Donating our time to organizations is another great way. Keeping ourselves up to date on what’s going on in the world is not only just good for us as an informed citizen, but spreading it can help people be aware too. Simple gestures can create a difference. Compliment someone. Call or text someone just to say hi. Smile. Open a door for someone. Thank the cashier, the waitress, and the janitor. Help someone pick up what they’ve dropped and offer to help carry their things part of the way. Be sensitive about the losses and disappointments of others. Even when you don’t know what to say, you can “be there”. Just your physical presence says, ” I care about you and what you are going through.” Every little step and every positive word counts.
One song can spark a moment. One flower can wake the dream. One tree can start a forest. One smile begins a friendship. One clap lifts a soul. One star can guide a ship. One word can frame the goal. One vote can change a nation. One sunbeam light a room. One candle wipes out darkness. One laugh will conquer gloom. One step mus start a journey. One hope will raise our spirits. One touch can show care. One voice can speak with wisdom. One life can make a difference and that difference starts with the Self.
